More on Canterbury

CNN is reporting on the furor over the Archbishop of Canterbury’s statements concerning Islamic Sharia law. See earlier post. The BBC is also reporting further developments in the story here. According to both sources at least two members of the Church of England’s General Synod are calling for the resignation of Canterbury. I wouldn’t hold your breath on this happening. However, the CNN report brings to light a piece missed in the prior reporting. There is already a provision under British law for alternative dispute resolution for certain types of dispute before religious bodies (such as a Jewish or Muslim tribunal). I’m no longer sure what Canterbury is talking about. I understood him to be propounding alternative dispute resolution as described above. Apparently this already exists. One is left to wonder precisely what he was advocating. I think perhaps DF over at the Reformed Pastor has it right: “Open Mouth. Insert Whole Leg.”
